Nordic Chamber Music
I was honored to be included in Northwest Edvard Grieg Society's Nordic Chamber Music Series, playing in the "Six Danish Strings" concerts in Ballard and Tacoma in January. The program included pieces by Mark Hilliard Wilson, Dietrich Buxtehude, and Lars Hegaard. Musicians included:
Evan Pengra Sult, flute
Elizabeth Phelps, violin
Rachel Yoder, clarinet
Josie Zocco, piano
Bonnie Whiting, percussion
Daren Weissfisch, conductor
Mark H. Wilson, guitar
Guitars: Lucas Victor, Alex Lathum, Jason Dewiler, Leland Holeman, Brian Bunch, David Fetrow, Ellen Rak, Dian Chase, and Ted Bae (Seattle Guitar Orchestra)
The music by the different composers was very distinctive. Dreams by Lars Hegaard had a dark, dramatic, atmospheric sound, with some parts reminiscent of heavy metal. Mark Hilliard-Wilson's pieces were much more tranquil and fluid. The closing piece for the concert was a complex atonal work, which was much more conversational, a long three-movement work depicting three different literary works.
